Leonard Evert Mellberg, Physicist at Ocean Physics Associates, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Oceanography.

Mr. Mellberg has held the role of chief scientist at Ocean Physics since 2000, and was formerly a research physicist with the U.S. Navy Underwater Systems Center for almost 20 years.  He was recognized in 1977 with a Naval Underwater Systems Center Excellence in Science Award, and worked with NATO and the Office of Naval Research in London over a fruitful career in science. Mr. Mellberg was also recognized with an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and was selected for the pages of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, and Who’s Who in the World.

A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Mr. Mellberg earned a BS in physics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1961, followed by postgraduate studies with the University of Connecticut and a MS in physics from Trinity College in 1968. He was always good with science, even as a young man, and has since achieved success through recognizing what needs to be discovered in ocean physics and recognizing important connections. Mr. Mellberg served in the ‘50s with the U.S. Army’s occupational forces in Berlin, Germany, and was with the U.S. Navy’s underwater Sound Laboratory for seven years. At the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Mr. Mellberg’s work was vital to anti-submarine warfare acoustics, sea-ice morphology, and lighter than air vehicles, studies that later contributed to major NATO exercises and fleet operations.

Mr. Mellberg’s work was later applied to the fishing industry, off-shore oil drilling, and the initiation of major Navy studies into oceanic thermohaline discontinuity. He was presented with a 1991 Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and was decorated with a 1985 Civilian Navy Meritorious Arctic Commendation, both from the U.S. Department of the Navy and just two of the many honors he has received. Notably, Mr. Mellberg holds a 1972 Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic Service Award from NATO. He is an emeritus member of the Acoustical Society of America, a senior and lifetime member of the IEEE, as well as a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Institute of Physics.
