Title: Physicist, Laser-Plasma Interaction Theorist
Company: Leidos Inc.
Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Serge Y. Kalmykov, Physicist, Laser-Plasma Interaction Theorist at Leidos, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in plasma theory, high-field laser science, advanced accelerator concepts, relativistic nonlinear optics and plasma-based radiation sources.
Dr. Kalmykov’s latest position utilizes more than 20 years of experience in the physics and astronomy fields. In 2017, he took on a physicist role with the Advanced Solutions Group at Leidos Inc. Furthermore, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has employed his talents as an adjunct professor since 2017. He originally joined the faculty at the institution in 2010, starting as a senior research associate. Prior to this position, Dr. Kalmykov was a research associate for the Institute for Fusion Studies at The University of Texas at Austin and a junior research scientist at the Institute of High Energy Densities of Joint Institute High Temperatures at the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Kalmykov became interested in science due to growing up in a small town with a big military industry in the Soviet Union. He saw how respected physicists and engineers were in society and decided to pursue the field. Along the way, he met many teachers and mentors who encouraged his learning. Now an educator, Dr. Kalmykov enjoys doing the same for his students. One highlight of his career that stood out was understanding the nature of electron beam formation in the laser wakefield accelerator, opening the path to all-optical control of electron beam properties. Dr. Kalmykov attributes his success to his competitiveness and persistence, as well as to his rigorous academic training in the system of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In his career, Dr. Kalmykov has received numerous accolades for his work, including being a senior member of the Optical Society of America and the IEEE. Furthermore, he was an Outstanding Referee for the Journals of the American Physical Society., and he has received student and graduate student stipends from the International Soros Science Foundation with the Open Society Institute. He earned a Master of Science in engineering, physics, and, applied mathematics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, summa cum laude, in 1995. He earned a PhD in the physics of plasmas from the Russian Academy of Science. Following these degrees, Dr. Kalmykov served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre de Physique Théorique, École Polytechnique and in the theory division at the Max-Planck Institut für Quantenoptik and Illinois State University.
