Siyan Ma, Research Scientist at University of California, Berkeley, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in ecosystem studies.
A dedicated scientist and experienced researcher, Dr. Ma has contributed extraordinary research to the field of science, specializing in ecosystem studies. She has worked as an associate specialist for the University of California, Berkeley, since 2004, educating others about climate change, carbon dioxide emissions and ecosystem functioning. She has authored and co-authored approximately 25 published papers, and recently published an article she had worked on for three years following several rejections of the piece. Though her boss advised she change her perspective, Dr. Ma knew her work held value, persevering and ultimately achieving publication. In preparation for her influential career, she sought higher education at the urging of her mother, a geologist studying frozen soil who recognized Dr. Ma’s love for the sciences. Dr. Ma earned a Bachelor of Science from the China Agricultural University in Beijing in 1991 as well as a Master of Science from the same institution in 1996, focusing in agricultural meteorology, biometeorology and climatology. Upon immigrating to the United States in 1998, Dr. Ma obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in forest ecology from the University of Toledo in 2003.
Dr. Ma delights in exploring the mysteries of the forest and is grateful for her mother’s influence, attributing her success to her mother. After she had been accepted into graduate school in the United States, Dr. Ma discovered new ways to observe data and ask questions, each day inspired by the possibilities her research presents. Concerned with the sharing of information, Dr. Ma hopes to bring what she has learned back to her native China. She and her husband, Rui Zhou, met in college and pursued similar interests, though Dr. Ma focuses on research. Their son is preparing for college and Dr. Ma encourages him to pursue his interest, just as her own mother encouraged her. Dr. Ma holds membership with the American Geophysical Union and the Ecology Association of America, contributing excellent research to the field of science. Recognized for her success, Dr. Ma has been awarded The Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been recognized in Who’s Who in the World.
