James R. Simms, Retired President and Physicist at Simms Industries, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics engineering and quantitative life science.
Mr. Simms became involved in the profession of physics engineering and quantitative life sciences after his military service in Guam during World War II. While working on weapons in the physics and engineering department in conjunction with the missile program, he questioned why he was involved in the lethal weapons process at all, and thus determined that the devastating outcomes of war began with social, behavioral and religious activities. Coming to this realization, Mr. Simms aspired to make behavioral and social sciences replicate hard sciences, such as physics and chemistry, in an effort to show the public the difference between truth and falsifications.
Earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1950, Mr. Simms began working in the field of engineering, eventually ascending the ranks of success to manager of electronics and systems engineering, director of operations, program manager and senior associate. For the latter half of his career, he served as president of Simms Industries, Inc., from 1983 until his retirement from the industry in 1997. During his prominent career, he was credited with the invention of a correlation missile guidance system and conducted research in quantitative casual methodologies and theories in behavioral, social and political science, systems research and analysis.
Throughout his career, Mr. Simms has authored three books: “A Measure of Knowledge,” published in 1971, “The Limits of Behavior: A Quantitative Social Theory,” published in 1983,” and “Principles of Quantitative Living System Science,” published in 2006. His 1971 book discusses how to measure and quantify knowledge based on theories and equations, putting forth the notion that theories of knowledge will provide a step on the path toward more reliable quantification of behavioral phenomena. His 1983 book is a review of extant social theory with the ultimate realization that these theories did not include the quantitative universal phenomena of life. The book was reviewed by Alexander King, who approved Mr. Simms’ theories and suggested application to a world economic system. Mr. Simms’ 2006 book is a culmination of his previous two books and myriad scientific papers, leading to the hypothesis that fundamental principles can be discovered for a quantitative social science that replicates those of the physical sciences. Within the next five years, Mr. Simms hopes to publish his fourth book, which will be titled, “Quantitative Living System Science.”
To remain aware of recent changes within the industry, Mr. Simms formerly maintained affiliation with several organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the World Future Society, the American Society for Cybernetics, and the International Society for the Systems Sciences, among others. Civically, he has associated with local government objectives as the former president of the Southern Howard County Democrat’s Club in 1979 and as a county coordinator for several committees to elect Congresswoman Byron between 1978 and 1982. The proud father of one daughter, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, Mr. Simms enjoys piloting planes in his spare time, having first received his pilot’s license at the age of 60.
