Carol Peebles, Scientist at Inova Diagnostics, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical technology.
Ms. Peebles became involved in her profession because her mother worked in the medical field as a nurse. She enjoyed the medical field, but decided to become a medical technologist instead. She liked to be on the cutting edge, so when the opportunity presented itself, she went into research in autoimmune rheumatic disease. She’s been working in that field since 1974. One of the highlights of her career has been the opportunity to participate in the discovery of a number of different autoantibodies that are important markers in diagnosing systemic rheumatic disease and some types of cancer. Through the use of these antibodies, researchers are able to develop more personalized medical treatment. It’s also been exciting to see the number of scientists and the amount of information that’s developed by the use of these autoantibodies in cell biology. Each day brings something new.
Following her love of science, she first earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kansas State College (now Pittsburgh State University) in 1962. She continued at the school, receiving a Master of Science in 1964. She spent nearly the first decade of her post-collegiate career as a medical technologist at St. Francis Hospital (now Via Christi Hospital St. Francis). In 1974, she joined the staff as the Laboratory Supervisor in Allergy and Immunology at The Scripps Research Institute. She was then invited to be the laboratory supervisor at the Health Science Center at the University of Colorado, Denver. She remained in this role from 1977 to 1982. In addition, she worked in the lab of E.M. Tan, MD from 1974 to 2001. She returned to The Scripps Research Institute in 1982, this time as a senior research assistant in the Autoimmune Disease Center. Ms. Peebles remained here until 2001, then moving into her current role as a scientist with Inova Diagnostics.
