Michael Kounavis, Ph.D., Staff Research Scientist at Intel Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in software engineering.

From a formative age, Dr. Kounavis has been passionate about and interested in the invention of electronics, particularly involving software and hardware engineering. Inspired initially by his father, a communications engineer, he pursued formal education at Columbia University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 2003. While pursuing his doctorate, he served as a graduate research assistant at the university from 1996 to 2003.

Since 2004, Dr. Kounavis has been a staff research scientist at Intel Corporation, located in Hillsboro, OR. In his unique position, he has aided in the delivery of the AES encryption engine, the invention of the AES encryption, and the invention of the Intel AESNI instruction set. In an effort to share his wealth of knowledge with the scientific community, he has contributed myriad articles to professional journals within his areas of expertise.

Dr. Kounavis has maintained affiliation with several organizations to remain abreast of developments within the industry, including the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Association for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, where he served as president from 2007 to 2012. As a testament to his profound success, he was the recipient of the Intel Achievement Award in 2008. Likewise, he was selected for inclusion in the 64th through 67th editions of Who’s Who in America.
