Umesh Prasad Agarwal, Ph.D., Research Chemist at the United States Department of Agriculture, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biochemistry.
Drawing upon nearly 40 years of industry experience, Dr. Agarwal is a prominent research chemist who has been serving the United States Department of Agriculture in the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI, since 1989. In his position, he has discovered new methods for determining cellulose crystallinity, advancing application of Raman spectroscopy for the analysis of lignin, cellulose and lignincellulosic biomass, understanding ultrastructure of wood cell walls, understanding the mechanism of mechanical pulp photoyellowing, and identifying the yellowing causing chromophores, among other discoveries. Since the inception of his career in 1979, he has contributed more than 100 articles to peer-reviewed journals and chapters to books, as well as served as an editor of several more publications.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Agarwal served the Institute of Paper Science and Technology as a professor and research scientist from 1985 to 1989, having previously been an instructor and research fellow with the institute in 1984. Prior to these endeavors, he was a postdoctoral fellow of the Renewable Bioproduct Institutes with the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Science and Engineering Research Council with Durham University from 1979 to 1980. He commenced his career as a Leverhulme fellow at the University of Salford in England in 1979. Alongside his vocational pursuits, he has been an editorial board member for “Fibers” since 2018.
Dr. Agarwal holds a Master of Science from Agra College and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. A member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, the American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi, he has been rewarded multiple times for his prominence in the field. Dr. Agarwal has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the Midwest.
