Howard Franklyn Efner, PhD Chemist (Retired), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in organic chemistry.

With an impressive professional history dating back more than four decades, Dr. Efner chalks up his original interest in the field of science to being a curious kid with a chemistry set. As he got older, he realized organic chemists were hands-on in their approach to the scientific method. Organic chemists were at the bench synthesizing and characterizing compounds. What ensued is a career working as a researcher for the Naval Research Laboratory and for Phillips Petroleum Co. Prior to retiring in 1999; Dr. Efner was a research specialist with Phillips Petroleum Co. Furthermore, he is a United States Army veteran, having served from 1967 to 1969 as a 1st Lieutenant.

Dr. Efner pursued his dreams of becoming an organic chemist first at Eastern Michigan University. He received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at the institution. In 1971, he received a Master of Science in chemistry from the University of Iowa and continued at the University of North Dakota to earn a PhD in organic chemistry in 1975. The highlight of Dr. Efner’s career was with an industry consortium called Deep Star with the paraffin deposition. It was work they did to determine what type of paraffin’s were in crude oil that was responsible for adhering to the wall of a pipeline and eventually clogging it up. In 1975, he received the Graduate Research Award from Sigma Xi. He has also maintained professional affiliation with the American Institute of Chemists, the American Chemical Society, the Society of Plastics Engineers, Sigma Xi, Alpha Chi Sigma and AARL.
