With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Calkins has been a member of the contingent faculty at Ferris State University since 2011 and a consultant with XDX since 1981. In addition to his primary roles, he was an associate professor of math and science at Andrews University from 1993 to 2001, where he previously served as assistant director of technology support from 1978 to 1993.
Dr. Calkins began his career as a student at Andrews University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1981, a Master of Science in computer information science in 1982, a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1988, and a Master of Science in physics and mathematics in 1991. He continued his studies with the University of Notre Dame, completing a Master of Science in physics in 1996. He then returned to Andrews University for a Master of Arts in teaching in 2002. Dr. Calkins later concluded his studies with the University of Notre Dame, earning a PhD in physics in 2005. A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Calkins has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the National Speleological Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Mathematics Society. He has also been affiliated with the Sons of the American Revolution, the TeX Users Group, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Pi Sigma, and Pi Mu Epsilon.
