Paul S. Duffey, PhD, Retired Microbiologist at the California Department of Health Care Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in microbiology research.

Inspired to enter his profession by a high school science teacher, Dr. Duffey became particularly interested in biology upon studying toward his bachelor’s degree. Earning a Bachelor of Arts from San Jose State University in 1963, he went on to complete postgraduate coursework at the University of California in 1968. Soon thereafter, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan in 1974. Dr. Duffey commenced his career as an assistant professor of research at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1974, a position he held for two years. Later on, he served the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio as an assistant professor of microbiology for the following five years before becoming a longtime research scientist at the California Department of Health Care Services from 1981 until his retirement in 2018. During his time, he also sat on the Governor’s Task Force on Biotechnology in Sacramento, CA, from 1985 to 2018.

A certified public health microbiologist in the state of California, Dr. Duffey maintains an interest in blood diseases, including their underlying causes, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Among the notable highlights of his career, he is most proud of the work he conducted in New York. Every few weeks, he commuted to New York from Michigan to conduct research in microbiology, which was substantial and altered the course of his research and life.

To remain abreast of developments in the industry, Dr. Duffey maintains affiliation with a number of professional organizations, including the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Association of Immunologists. He is also a member of the Northern California chapter of the American Society for Microbiology, as well as the Northern California Public Health Microbiologists Association. As a testament to his success, he was featured in the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the West.

Married to the late Dixon Anita Herrick in 1988, Dr. Duffey is a native of Oakland, CA, and he currently resides in Moraga, CA. In his spare time, he enjoys computer assembling and software writing. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue on his current path.
