Elizabeth Ann Stein, PhD, Retired Associate Research Immunologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in immunology.
Growing up in a rural area of Kansas, Dr. Stein enjoyed being in nature and desired to study it as much as she could. First earning a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in education from Emporia State University (formerly known as Kansas State Teachers College) in 1952, she transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles, where she received a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in zoology in 1954 and 1960, respectively. While pursuing her bachelor’s degrees, she served as a teaching assistant at Emporia State University for two years prior to acting as a graduate teaching assistant in the department of zoology at the University of California, Los Angeles, for an additional three years. While pursuing her doctorate degree, she was a National Science Foundation research fellow at the university for two years before serving as a postgraduate research anatomist from 1975 to 1979. Serving the university for the remainder of her career, from 1979 to 1986, she was an assistant research anatomist, and an assistant research immunologist from 1986 to 1990. From 1990 until her retirement in 2001, she served as an associate research immunologist.
Dr. Stein was a regular contributor of articles to scientific journals and chapters to books regarding immunology and diabetes research. She is a former member of the International Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunology, the Western Society of Naturalists and Sigma Xi. Among the notable highlights of her career, she cites the highlight of her profession to be her enjoyment of her work and having the opportunity to come to work every day with a smile on her face.
The proud mother of two children, Beth and David, Dr. Stein enjoys hiking, camping, horseback riding and reading in her spare time. She was selected for inclusion in the 23rd and 24th editions of Who’s Who in the West.
