Originally planning on being a chemist, Dr. Claiborne earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1973 and began working as a chemotechnician for Sued Chemie A.G., in Moosburg, Germany, from 1973 to 1975. He then realized he wanted to pursue materials science and went back to school, earning a PhD in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University 1984. Following this achievement, Dr. Claiborne worked as a senior scientist for Westinghouse Electric (now ABB Power T&D Company Inc.), in Sharon, PA, from 1984 to 1991 before transferring to the Raleigh, NC, location from 1991 to 1997. He remained in North Carolina and worked for the company as a senior scientist, fellow scientist, United States environmental specialist and a principal consulting R&D scientist before establishing Claiborne Consulting LLC, in 2017.
In addition to his main pursuits, Dr. Claiborne contributed over 75 articles to professional journals and wrote “Working with Metals” and “Working with Non-Metals,” both in 1981. He holds more that 10 United States patents and four European patents in the field and, as a testament to his success holds membership with the Society of Plastics Engineers, IEEE, American Chemical Society, International Electrotechnical Commission, International Council on Large Electric Systems and Alpha Kappa Lambda. Dr. Claiborne enjoys his career and is extremely proud of earning a PhD, his invention of Biotemp with Dr. TV Oomen and winning the IR 100 Award and the ACS Award in North Carolina. Dr. Claiborne has been lauded with the coveted Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been featured in the 25th edition of Who’s Who in the East and the eighth and ninth editions of Who’s Who in the World.
