Edward J. Seppi, PhD, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics and research.

Nationally recognized by the American Physical Society as an expert in the scientific field over the last four decades, Dr. Seppi demonstrates expertise in research for multiple areas of physics, including nuclear, cells PhET, high energy, laser and medical device physics. He holds more than 70 patents in medical instrumentation, and he is regarded for his work developing a CT scanner using mega-volt radiation used in cancer therapy. Dr. Seppi is also known for his work directing the development and construction of “Beam Switch Yard” at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, joining an experiment users groups at Varian Inc., developing and producing the world’s first whole-body successful three-second CT scanner and assisting in the successful CT scans of six patients including heart scans on an early heart transplant patient.

Now retired, Dr. Seppi concluded his career as a principal scientist at the Varian Ginston Research Center in Palo Alto, California. He held this role for 19 years after having already found success with its parent company Varian Associates in multiple roles. Previously, he was a senior scientist, technical director, engineering manager of the radiation division, manager of the computer tomography division and manager of medical diagnostic instrumentation. Other noteworthy roles held throughout Dr. Seppi’s tenure include head of the experimental facility department for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Stanford, California, staff physicist for the Institute for Defense Analyses, research fellow of the California Institute of Technology, staff physicist for the General Electric at Hanford Atomic Works and member of Physics of Medical Imaging. In addition to his full-time work, Dr. Seppi often took on career-related projects in his industry. He was a scientist for the Superconducting Super Collider in Dallas, Texas and consultant for the Institute of Defense Analysis. He also co-authored “The Stanford Two-Mile Accelerator” and contributed articles to more than 50 scientific publications.

At the core of Dr. Seppi’s accomplishments is the education that provided him with a solid understanding and breadth of knowledge of his field. He earned a PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1962, a Master of Science from the University of Idaho in 1956 and a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University in 1952. In looking ahead to the future, Dr. Seppi intends to enjoy his well-deserved retirement.
