Shirley Thieda, Consultant, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of geology.
One of the first female geologists, Ms. Thieda was encouraged by her parents to become whatever she wanted. They often traveled to the West where Ms. Thieda would gravitate toward rocks, fossils, and anything volcanic. This prompted her interest in geology and she professionally pursued her interest at Southern Illinois University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and later a Master of Studies at the New Mexico Institute Technology in 1972. She taught earth science at Ruidoso High School and Santa Rosa Middle School, both in New Mexico, and considers her time teaching to be the highlight of her career as she was able to create her own curriculum for the students. Following her time as a teacher, Ms. Thieda spent time working as a geologist for Pioneer Nuclear Incorporated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 1974 to 1979 and then transitioned to working as a consultant, geologist, and landman for the organization. Ms. Thieda briefly worked as a senior geologist with Cactus Resources in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1984 and now consults in a private practice.
In order to remain abreast of developments in her field, Ms. Thieda is a member of the Albuquerque Geological Society. She has been president of the organization in 1986 and treasurer in 1984. She also served as the education chairman of the Albuquerque Landsmen’s Association in 1982, secretary and treasurer of the Referee’s Association Club from 1978 to 1979, and holds a membership with both organizations as well as with the American Association of Petroleum Landmen and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Additionally, she is a level three Reiki Master and, due to her success, has been featured in the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 20th edition of Who’s Who in the West.
