Marthanne Payne Alemán, environmental scientist and consultant at Rio Verde Land & Investment Corp, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in agricultural science.
Having spent ten years growing avocados, Dr. Alemán saw resources deteriorating as a result of an inadequate complement of crops. She served the Texas Avocado Growers Association from 1979 to 1983 and a secretary, treasurer, and board member, and prepared for her career at the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University. She graduated from the university in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in landscape architecture. Dr. Alemán continued her education at Texas Technical University and earned a Master of Science before returning to the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in urban and regional studies in 1995. She entered the professional field as an engineering aide for the city of Austin in 1966 before becoming an engineer for Bryant-Curington Engineers in 1969.
From 1972 to 1994, Dr. Alemán found success as an entrepreneur at Rio Verde Farm, a research assistant at Texas Technical University, and as a research assistant at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University. She currently holds the position of a consultant with Rio Verde Land & Investment Corporation in Calvert, Texas. Notably, Dr. Alemán in the author of “Soil Salinity in the Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley: Cause for Concern” and “Export-Driven Development of Soil and Water Resources: Barrier to Sustainable Development and Inducement to Desertification.” As an active member of the American Planning Association and the Soil and Water Conservation Society of America, she has received a Presidential Scholarship from the US Federal Register, and a National Collegiate Architectural and Design award.
