Francis Markland, Biochemist, Educator, and Co-founder at Disintegrin Therapeutics, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of biochemistry and higher education.

As a student, Dr. Markland attended Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1957. He continued his education at Johns Hopkins University, earning a PhD in 1964, and started as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Los Angeles, rising to the rank of assistant professor of biochemistry in 1966. In 1973, he transitioned to the University of Southern California as a visiting assistant professor and became an associate professor in 1974. After nearly a decade, Dr. Markland became a professor of biochemistry and molecular medicine in 1983, and from 1986 to 1988, he served as the acting chairman of the department of biochemistry. He served as the vice-chairman of the department of biochemistry at the University of Southern California from 1988 to 1992, and in 2004, he took a position as the associate dean for science affairs, which he held until 2008. In 2009, he co-founded Disintegrin Therapeutics.

As a young man, Dr. Markland served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1959, rising to the rank of captain before his honorable discharge. He has been recognized for his excellence with myriad awards, including receiving the National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award from the United States Public Health Service. In the coming years, he plans to continue his work with disintegrins (proteins found in viper venom) and hopes to get them into clinical trials, where their potential as anti-coagulants could be fully explored and realized. In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Markland has maintained memberships to a variety of professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the American Chemical Society, among others. As a testament to his success and stature, Dr. Markland has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in America.
