Hong Shih, Senior Technology Director at Fellow-Etch Products Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in scientific research and engineering.
Dr. Shih has loved science since he was in high school which prompted him to attend Pecking University with the goal of becoming a scientist. He received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the institution in 1970 and later a Master of Science in electrochemistry from Academia Sinica, Electric Power Institute, in 1981. During his time growing up in China, Dr. Shih was surrounded by civil revolutions and was faced with the ultimatum of joining the revolution or enrolling in university. By choosing the latter, Dr. Shih propelled himself into an educational journey that took longer than he expected. When he was working in the factory, technology was not fully recognized so he had to pause his work. However, Dr. Shih did not want to give up.
As a result, he received the chance to immigrate to the United States as a graduate student. He earned a PhD in metallurgy from the Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering at Pennsylvania State University in 1986 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the University of Southern California Los Angeles from 1986 to 1988. Since the conclusion of his time as a student, Dr. Shih has been a research assistant at Pennsylvania State University, a senior research scientist and assistant research professor within the University of Southern California, and a senior scientist within physical chemistry department of GM Research Lab in Warren, Michigan. He has also served as Member of the technical staff for the FMC Corporation Technical Center in San Jose, California, and both a senior process engineer and member of the technical staff of Applied Materials. Presently, Dr. Shih works as the senior technology director of Fellow-Etch Products Group as well as the president and chief research scientist of Cortech Corporation Company in Los Angeles.
Due to his success, Dr. Shih has been afforded membership to organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Testing Machines, the National Association Corrosion Engineers, and the Electrochemical Society. He has been a recipient of Recognition of Outstanding Technical Achievement at the ET Conference within the Lam Research Corporation in 2017, a Lam Fellowship in 2014, a McFarland Award from Pennsylvania State University in 2004, and a Wesley W. Founder Award in 1993, among other awards.
Of his accomplishments, Dr. Shih is the proudest of editing the book “Corrosion Resistance,” which covers the application of corrosion resistance materials. He is also proud of his work as a pioneer in the study of material under high-density plasma. Dr. Shih is an expert in plasma resistance materials, anodized aluminum, surface coatings, precision wet cleaning, defect, particle, and metal contamination reduction on plasma etching equipment served in semiconductor wafer fabrication. He is most proud of being a scientist as it is a career he never thought he would achieve.
