With this in mind, he first set out in his academic pursuits to reach his career goals. He first attended Seoul National University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in applied chemistry in 1971. After relocating to the United States in 1973, Dr. Nam continued at Oregon State University. At this institution, he received a Master of Science in chemical engineering in 1975. Following this, he earned an MSE in materials and metallurgical engineering at the University of Michigan in 1978. In 1982, he achieved a PhD in polymer engineering at the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Nam is an expert in rheology, which is the study of how the stress in a material or force applied is related to deformation and flow of the material. He first leveraged his expertise in this area as a teaching and research assistant at the University of Oregon from 1973 to 1975. He then provided similar services when he continued his education at the University of Michigan from 1975 to 1978 and the University of Tennessee from 1979 to 1982.
