James Chao, PhD, Strategist at IBM Alphaworks, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemistry.

In his nearly 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Chao served as a business development strategist for emerging technology at IBM Alphaworks from 2002 to 2009, has provided his skills and experience as a program manager for strategic IP licensing since 2002, and as an advisory scientist at the material engineering laboratory since 1987. In addition to his primary roles, he has held a number of academic positions, as an adjunct professor of chemistry with Duke University from 2000 to 2007, where he was previously an adjunct associate professor from 1992 to 2000, an adjunct assistant professor from 1987 to 1991, and visiting associate professor from 1986 to 1987. Earlier in his career, he was an advanced technical applications scientist with IBM Instruments, Inc., from 1980 to 1987.

Dr. Chao first pursued an education with the University of Illinois, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, with high honors, in 1975. He continued his studies with the school, completing a Master of Science in chemistry in 1976. He then joined the University of California Berkeley, earning a PhD in physical chemistry in 1980. A member of the Coblentz Society and Sigma Xi, he has been recognized as a fellow of the New York Academy of Scientists, the American Institute of Chemists, and the American Chemical Society.
