Hélène Dickel, PhD, Professor Emeritus of the University of Illinois, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Astronomy.
With 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Dickel has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of Illinois since 2005. Prior to her retirement, she was an astronomy professor from 1977 to 2005, having been a research associate from 1965 to 1977. In addition to her primary roles, she served as a visiting astronomer with Sterrewacht te Leiden from 1977 to 1979 and again from 1999 to 2001, and with the Australia Telescope National Facility from 1992 to 1993, where she was also a research professor from 2001 to 2005. She was also a collaborator with the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1983 to 1992 and a visiting fellow of Radiophysics and commonwealth science with the Industrial Research Organization from 1970 to 1971.
Dr. Dickel first pursued an education with Mount Holyoke College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1959. She then joined the University of Michigan, completing a Master of Arts in 1961. She continued her studies with the school, earning a PhD in 1964.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Dr. Dickel has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the American Astronomical Society, the International Astronomical Union, and the Mount Holyoke Alumni Club. She has also been active with the Association of Women in Science, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi.
Throughout her career, Dr. Dickel has been recognized for her contributions. A Rackham Dissertation Fellow, she is a grantee of the National Science Foundation, the International Science Foundation, and NATO. She is most proud of the work she has done in collaborations, where she has been able to help others fill the gaps in their abilities and they have done the same for her. She has also trained figure skating competitive winners, including her daughters, and they have gone on to compete nationally at a high level.
