C. James Blom, Geologist, Consultant and Retired Vice President of Eastern Hemisphere Exploration at Occidental Petroleum, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geology.
As a registered professional engineer and geologist in the state of California, Dr. Blom worked as a geologist for Standard Oil California from 1955 to 1964. He subsequently accepted a position as the vice president of Eastern hemisphere exploration at Occidental Petroleum, where he remained until his retirement from full-time professional pursuits in 1983. In the years since, he has leveraged his experience and knowledge as a consultant in Bakersfield, California, and additionally holds patents in his field. Dr. Blom has also found success through his creative work, authoring “Moho Motion: How the Atlantic Widens” in 2017.
Dr. Blom pursued an education at the California Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1950. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, where he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1953. Following these achievements, he served in the United States Army until 1955, receiving an honorable discharge. Among his myriad career achievements, Dr. Blom is most proud of his tenure with Occidental Petroleum, where he helped to grow the organization from a small operation to a massive company. He maintains affiliation with the Geological Society of America and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and has been recognized as the recipient of the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor conferred by Marquis Who’s Who. Dr. Blom is involved with research on the mechanics of the Earth’s evolution, and believes that his daily interaction with members of his field has helped him to keep up with changes and developments.
