Dean L. Preston, PhD, Theoretical Physicist at the X Computational Physics Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in publishable science.
Interested in physics since junior high school, Dr. Preston has served the XCP-5 section on materials and physical data of the X Computational Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as a fellow in 2016 and a laboratory associate fellow since 2017. Starting his career as a researcher in the physics department at Princeton University in 1980, he has since served Los Alamos National Laboratory in a number of capacities. Additionally, he served as the project leader for the ASC PEM Materials Project from 2015 to 2017. In preparation for his illustrious career, Dr. Preston graduated as the valedictorian of Oswego High School in New York in 1971 and pursued a formal education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, earning a Bachelor of Science in physics, summa cum laude, in 1975. He then attended Princeton University in New Jersey, where he attained a PhD in physics in 1980.
A contributor to numerous selected presentations, as well as articles to professional journals, what Dr. Preston is most proud of is the physics model that he developed. It is used at Los Alamos National Laboratory and their sister laboratory in Albuquerque and Livermore, New Mexico, along with being used on an international level. A fellow and member of the American Physical Society, he is the recipient of myriad honors and accolades throughout his career, including the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Currently building a second home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dr. Preston was selected for inclusion in the second edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering. Moving forward, he would like to be working on the theoretical physics and the quantum theory of gravity. He is hoping that he can transition to different areas of theoretical physics, being the different aspects of physics. This goes back to his training in graduate school when he did quantum field theory.
