John J. Degnan III, PhD, Physicist and Technical Consultant at Sigma Space Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements and leadership in laser instrumentation.
Dr. Degnan became interested in physics in high school. He followed this interest to college, attending Drexel University in Pennsylvania and earning a Bachelor of Science in physics. He went on to earn a master’s degree and PhD from the University of Maryland. There, his program found him the perfect position to complete his coursework, which was as a student trainee at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. By the time he graduated in 1968, he had accepted a full-time position there. Dr. Degnan stayed with NASA until 2003, holding positions such as senior physicist, deputy manager and head of the geoscience technology office, among several others. From 2003 until his retirement in 2018, he relocated and became the chief scientist at Sigma Space Corporation. He remains there today, however, in a smaller capacity as a semi-retired technical consultant.
Outside of his primary roles, Dr. Degnan found joy in educating physics students. He has previously lectured at the Sor School in Germany and was an adjunct professor at American University from 1988 until 1993. Furthermore, throughout his career, he has published over 200 conference papers and articles in scientific journals. As a testament to his success, Dr. Degnan is featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
