Lamia M. Al Naama, PhD, University Professor at Basrah Medical College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements and leadership in chemical biochemistry.

Loving teaching and all aspects of the development of students, Dr. Al Naama enjoys helping them with their work and nurturing their skills for them to one day be successful. She began her career as an assistant pharmacist in the Department of Pharmacy at Basrah Republic Teaching Hospital in 1969, remaining in this role for one year before becoming a research assistant in the Department of Biochemistry at Basrah Medical College from 1971 to 1979. She then joined the University of Manchester as a research fellow in the Department of Medical Biochemistry from 1975 to 1979 and lecturer and researcher in the Department of Biochemistry from 1979 to 1995. Dr. Al Naama returned to Basrah Medical College as department head of biochemistry from 1982 to 2015 and professor/department head of biochemistry from 1995 to 2015. She most recently served as a professor at the University of Basrah College of Medicine from 1996 to 2015, also working in the college’s hemoglobinopathies unit in 1998.

In preparation for her career, Dr. Al Naama pursued a formal education at the University of Baghdad College of Pharmacy, earning a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy in 1970. She then attended the University of Manchester, where she attained a PhD in medical biochemistry in 1979. A frequent speaker at numerous national and international conferences, she maintains affiliation with several organizations related to her field. Notably, she chaired the advisory committee of clinical laboratories of the Basrah Health Directorate from 1984 to 2010. In light of her achievements, Dr. Al Naama is the recipient of the Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award. She attributes her success to the love and support of her family. Without their support, she would not have had the opportunity to be in any of the positions she has held.

Dr. Al Naama comes from a family full of professionals in the medical field. Her father’s occupation as a dean of a medical college and cardiac physician was an influence on her own career choices and opportunities. Moving forward, Dr. Al Naama wishes to continue to publish papers and read more. She plans to continue to help others in any way that she can for as long as she can. Her philosophy is simply to continue to help others.
