Theodore Belsky, Environmental Biochemist at the California Department of Health Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in environmental science.
Now retired, Dr. Belsky worked as an environmental biochemist who began his career as an organic geochemist at the Space Science Laboratory at the University of California Los Angeles in 1966. After briefly working as a chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Albany, California for a year, he joined the California Department of Health Sciences in 1969. He flourished with the aforementioned organization as a public health chemist for 30 years until his retirement in 1999. Throughout his time as a public health chemist, Dr. Belsky utilized his expertise in organic materials to identify organic chemicals known to cause illness or death in humans.
Dr. Belsky was inspired to become a chemist while serving in the United States Navy. Between 1951 and 1955, he chose to contribute as a hospital core-man mainly because it was most intriguing. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he earned an associate’s degree from the City College of San Francisco in 1957. Dr. Belsky concluded his studies at the University of California Berkeley, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1966.
A respected voice in the industry, Dr. Belsky has authored numerous publications including the “Guide for Evaluation of Atmospheric Analysis” in 1973 and “Method Air Sampling and Analysis” in 1977. Additionally, he also contributed several articles to professional journals in the field. To remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the Bay Area Mass Spectrometry and the American Public Health Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Belsky has been featured in the 21st edition of Who’s Who in the West. In the coming years, he would like to utilize his retirement as enjoying quiet time with himself.
