Albert W. Girotti, Biochemist and Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in science education and research.

Dr. Girotti knew that he wanted to pursue a career in education after his experience in his high school science class. His teacher was not well-liked, but that was only because he was rigorous. Dr. Girotti loved science and admired his teacher’s passion for education, which motivated him to embark on an academic journey towards professional success in the field of education. After earning a Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts. From 1965 until 1969, he completed postgraduate coursework at Cornell University Medical College. Since 1969, Dr. Girotti has excelled as a professor of biochemistry at the Medical College of Wisconsin. 

Outside of his educational endeavors, Dr. Girotti has been an active member of the editorial board for Photochemistry and Photobiology since 2009. Some of his most notable accomplishments in his field include his research on the role of lipid peroxides in cancer, as well as on the role of nitric oxide in cancer progression and the regulation of cytoprotective nitric oxide in anti-tumor photodynamic therapy. From 1990 until 2017, he accepted consecutive research grants from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Girotti maintains his affiliation with the American Society of Photobiology, the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine and the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. 

Dr. Girotti’s career highlight was his experience in obtaining the program project with three investigators and working as the director, as it is known to be difficult by those in the field. Throughout his illustrious career, he has learned to read as much as possible. Science is ever-changing, and he finds that keeping an open mind about new developments is beneficial. As a testament to his success,  Dr. Girotti is featured in the 69th and 70th editions of Who’s Who in America.
