Joseph A. Akkara, Program Director at National Science Foundation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemistry.

Having accrued more than 60 years of inimitable experience in his field, Dr. Akkara is distinguished for his patents and publications in synthesis, modification, characterization and applications of polymers and materials for electro-optic and high performance multifunctional applications, as well as enzymology and research program management. Since 1999, he has notably served as a program director at the National Science Foundation, previously working as a research chemist at the U.S. Army Natick Research and Engineering Center from 1984 to 1999. He had also flourished as a biochemist statistician at a Boston toxicology service from 1981 to 1984, a senior scientist at the Medical Research Institute for one year and a chief radioassay at the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center from 1973 to 1980. For his outstanding success in his field, Dr. Akkara is a two-time recipient of the R&D Award from the U.S. Army, as well as the Inventor of the Year Award from the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Commission in 1998.

In the earlier years of his career in India, Dr. Akkara found success at the Medical College Trivandrum as a medical researcher and the Central Food Technological Research Institute as a technical assistant between 1959 and 1964. Upon his arrival to the U.S., he became active as a research associate to the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Rockefeller University and Brookdale Hospital Medical Center between 1964 and 1973. Additionally, he taught at Framingham State College from 1996 to 1999, and was recruited as a member of the biotechnology advisory board at Massachusetts Bay College. He notably obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the University of Missouri in 1969. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Akkara and his achievements have been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the World.
