Currently an independent consultant to the pharmaceutical industry in Ambler, Pennsylvania, since 2002, Dr. Veber formerly served Merck & Co., Inc., in West Point, Pennsylvania, for nearly 30 years in myriad positions. Achieving the rank of senior director of medicinal chemistry, he was subsequently recruited in 1993 by GlaxoSmithKline (formerly known as SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals). There, he served as the director of medicinal chemistry in their office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, until his retirement in 2002.
Renowned for his extensive experience in peptide and peptidomimetic chemistry, Dr. Veber has been lauded for his work on the synthesis of enzymes, which has been utilized in the development of drugs for HIV and AIDS patients. He holds numerous patents in his field and has contributed his expertise to 275 peer-reviewed journals. Likewise, he sat on the editorial boards of such journals as the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, the Journal of Peptide Science and Molecular Pharmaceuticals.
Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science, both in chemistry from Yale University, Dr. Veber subsequently completed a summer fellowship to conduct research in chemistry. He graduated from Yale in 1964 with a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry. An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he was recognized by the American Chemical Society with the 1988 Philadelphia Section Award and 2001 Ralph F. Hirschmann Award in Peptide Chemistry, among other accolades.
