Russell T. Pack, PhD, retired Theoretical Chemist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in theoretical chemistry.

Dr. Pack thoroughly enjoyed chemistry and mathematics as a high school student, and as an undergraduate, his passions continued to grow. He soon discovered that theoretical chemistry was a solid combination of both of his desired subjects. Dr. Pack earned a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University in 1962 and went on to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in 1966. Continuing with his education, he became a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Minnesota from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Pack commenced his career as an assistant professor at Brigham Young University in 1967. He remained with the university until 1988 holding the positions of associate professor and adjunct professor. In 1975, he also joined Los Alamos National Laboratory where he served as a staff scientist, associate group leader and theoretical chemist until reaching his retirement in 2005.

Looking back on his illustrious career, Dr. Pack recalls when computers were so small they were not able to do too much. As time went on, computers grew in size and moved faster, developing simpler and faster methods of doing calculations on bigger molecules. Originally only treating rotational states, as time went on, they added vibrational states and then reactive states, where the atoms trade partners. At the tail end of his career, they were just getting into treating three free bodies. As a testament to his success, Dr. Pack was named Senior U.S. Scientist by Alexander Von Humbolt in 1981 and was named a fellow of the American Physical Society. He is also listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in America.
