Donald F. Cowgill, PhD, Principal Physicist at Sandia National Laboratory, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics and research.
From a young age, Dr. Cowgill knew he was passionate about physics. Encouraged by his parents to pursue a formal education, he enrolled at Wichita State University after graduating from high school. In 1965, he acquired a Bachelor of Science in physics and mathematics, which provided him a foundation on which to further his education. One year later, Dr. Cowgill earned a Master’s degree in physics from his alma mater and went on to attain a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from Washington University in 1971. Since 1987, he has excelled as the principal physicist at Sandia National Laboratory in Livermore, California.
A contributor of articles to numerous professional journals, Dr. Cowgill holds various patents in his field. In 2001, the United States Department of Energy honored him with the Award of Excellence. This honor was in recognition of Dr. Cowgill’s work with understanding the behavior of materials that are exposed to tritium, which is the heaviest radioactive hydrogen element. Looking toward the future, he hopes to be settled into his retirement and travel the world. As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Cowgill is featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the World.
