Esteemed for his decades of professional experience, Dr. Chou has excelled as a laboratory director for Orange Toxicology Laboratory Inc. since 2020 and for Synergy Diagnostic Laboratories Inc. since 2019. Prior to these appointments, he flourished in multiple administrative posts at the Specialty Reference Laboratory between 1989 and 2001 and the Radioimmunoassay Center between 1976 and 1988. Furthermore, Dr. Chou worked as a clinical chemistry scientist with the Nichols Institute for Endocrinology from 1973 to 1976 and as a med-tech trainee with Western Laboratories from 1971 to 1972. Earlier, between 1969 and 1971, he served as a research associate at Mendocino State Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Missouri, where he was also active as a teaching and research assistant between 1964 and 1968.
Before embarking upon his professional ventures, Dr. Chou initially earned a Bachelor of Science in agricultural chemistry from National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan in 1954. He then commenced his career as a chemistry teacher at the Chisan Agricultural Vocational School from 1954 to 1956. Subsequently, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in food science at Oregon State University in 1958 and a Master of Science in food science at Washington State University in 1960. Dr. Chou eventually concluded his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the University of Missouri in 1968. Moreover, he became licensed as a clinical chemist in California and accrued a diploma from the American Board of Clinical Chemistry.
In addition to his primary responsibilities, Dr. Chou was recruited as a consultant with ICL Sciences in Fountain Valley, California. Notably, his professional accomplishments were highlighted in the 20th edition of Who’s Who in the West. Likewise, Dr. Chou has been affiliated with the Clinical Ligand Assay Society, the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and the North American Chinese Clinical Chemists Association, for which he was elected as the president in 1984.
Harboring an inherent interest in chemistry during his formative years, Dr. Chou was initially inspired to garner an education in food science to return to Taiwan and establish a pineapple factory. This was before his family’s history in medicine motivated him to operate within his own laboratory. Among the many highlights in his career, he was especially proud to have donated $700,000 to Chi-Hou Presbyterian Church in Kaohsiung, Taiwan between 2017 and 2018 to develop the House of Devotion, as well as build a community college in memory of his father. Looking toward the future, Dr. Chou hopes to continue thriving in his present position.
