Title: Retired Scientist
Location: Florence, Oregon, United States
Ojars Juris Sovers, Retired Scientist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics.
A renowned physicist, Dr. Sovers received a Bachelor of Science in psychics and chemistry from Brooklyn College in 1958 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics and physical chemistry from Princeton University in 1962. Between 1962 and 1964, he conducted postdoctoral coursework at Columbia University, along with prior National Science Foundation fellowships in chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Dr. Sovers commenced his career with Argonne National Laboratory in 1958, going on to work with technical staff at GTE Laboratories in Bayside, New York from 1964 to 1972 and at Sony Corporation’s Development Division in Tokyo, Japan from 1972 to 1978. Progressing in his career, he served Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California as a technical staff member from 1979 to 2015, as well as a contractor from 1998 to 2008. Dr. Sovers officially began his well-deserved retirement in 2015.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Sovers works in three aspects of physics and chemistry, including theoretical chemistry of molecular structures, lanthanide ion spectroscopy in solids and radio interferometric (VLBI) measurements to establish a coordinate reference frame for interplanetary spacecraft navigation. Notably, he contributed to the proper navigation of a new generation of JPL Mars probes and served on international committees to establish and evaluate celestial reference frames. Presently, he maintains affiliation with the American Physical Society, Sigma Xi and the International VLBI Service. Dr. Sovers and his family left Riga, Latvia in 1944 for Germany to avoid Soviet occupation and lived on a farm near Kempten, Bavaria. Between 1945 and 1950, they were held in displaced person camps in Kempten and Augsburg, in which Dr. Sovers completed seventh grade in the camp. In 1950, they immigrated to the United States to a farm near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. As a testament to his legacy, Dr. Sovers is also listed in the 21st edition of Who’s Who in the West.
