Ram D. Mehta, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer at PBR Laboratories Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in genetics.
Upon earning a Master of Science in plant breeding and genetics from Rajasthan Agriculture University in India in 1963, Dr. Mehta served at the aforementioned institution as an assistant professor until 1966. Desiring to pursue his scientific interest in genetics even further, he relocated to Canada and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in genetics from the University of Alberta in 1971. He subsequently completed a post-doctoral fellowship in microbial and eukaryotic genetics at the University of Guelph in 1974 and began his career as a research associate at the University of Alberta from 1971 to 1989. During this time, he worked on developing and validating in vitro genotoxicity assays utilized in screening mutagens and potential carcinogens. Dr. Mehta excelled as the president and chief executive officer of PBR Laboratories Inc. since 1984. Throughout his career, he has been known for such achievements as advocating for more discriminate use of untested consumer chemicals, and less widespread utilization of animals in toxicological investigations, mentoring University of Alberta graduates in honing professional skills in life sciences’ disciplines and encouraging them to expand their potential so as to become successful entrepreneurs or experts in their field of endeavor. Furthermore, Dr. Mehta has trained 50 Canadian undergraduates from various universities with hands-on experience at PBR Laboratories.
To remain aware of developments in his industry, Dr. Mehta maintains his affiliation with the Society of Toxicology, the American Society of Microbiology and the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society. Outside of his primary professional efforts, he is also active as the co-founder and president of the Society for the Education and Assistance of Rural Indian Children and the Society of Friends of Nepal. He attributes his vast success to the support of his parents, which consistently motivated him to achieve his best potential. With this sentiment, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Alberta in 2019, as well as several accolades from local community organizations in Canada. In the near future, Dr. Mehta aims to find the right candidate to take over his company in order for him to enter his well-deserved retirement. In his life, he was inspired by his parents, Nola Ram and Berjee-Boori Achra, who worked as farmers. His daughter Nirmala Mehta is a radiation oncologist and his daughter Veena Mehta is an occupational therapist.
