Mary Stinecipher Campbell, PhD, Retired Chemist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemistry.

Enjoying an exuberant career as a chemist, Dr. Campbell retired from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2004 following 28 years devoted to chemistry research, during which she invented ammonium nitrate explosive systems and other explosive salts. In addition, she had excelled as an adjunct professor of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry at the University of New Mexico Graduate Center from 1989 to 2005 and as a visiting scientist at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research on the Elgin Air Force Base in 1980 and 1981, crediting her mother’s influence as an educator for her own contributions to the field. In the earlier years of her career, Dr. Campbell was a postdoctoral researcher at the Research Triangle Institute between 1966 and 1976. Civically, she was commissioner of the Acequia Sancochada Community Ditch and secretary of the Rio Embudo MDWCA Domestic Water System.

Dr. Campbell received a Bachelor of Arts from Earlham College in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of North Carolina in 1967. To remain abreast of her industry, she maintains affiliation with the American Chemical Society and the New Mexico Network Women in Science and Engineering, of which she is a former vice president, president and Northern chapter president. She recalls various challenges as a woman in a male-dominated industry and credits Toastmasters for helping her build her confidence and improve as a leader. A certified organic fruit grower, Dr. Campbell is also a member of the Santa Fe Farmers Market and Taos Farmers Market. As a testament to her legacy, Dr. Campbell is also listed in various editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America. In her spare time, she enjoys dog training, hiking, singing and gardening.
