Louis J. Muglia, MD, PhD, President, Chief Executive Officer at Burroughs Wellcome Fund, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatrics.
Dr. Muglia always had the desire to impact human health in a positive way. The combination of his experience in clinical care and his research in pediatrics enabled him to fulfill a desire. He was able to make a great contribution to what he considers one of the biggest problems in human health today, which is preterm birth. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biophysics from the University of Michigan. He then matriculated at the University of Chicago, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular genetics and cell biology in 1986 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1988.
Dr. Muglia’s work was the first to identify the region in maternal genetic areas that determines the length of pregnancy in risk for preterm birth was a highlight of his career. Since 2020, he has been the president and chief executive officer of Burroughs Wellcome Fund and an adjunct professor of pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Previously held the position of visiting professor at the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Central Hospital from 2019 to 2020, A. Graeme Mitchell Chair and director of the Division of Human Genetics at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center from 2017 to 2019 and vice-chair for research at the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation and Department of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine from 2016 to 2019, to name a few. As a testament to his success, Dr. Muglia has received myriad accolades including but not limited to being elected for the Finish Academy of Science and Letters in 2020, being listed in Best Doctors in American from 2007 to 2020, named Outstanding Senior Mentor by the Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 2016 and receiving a Special Recognition for Excellence in Mentoring from Washington University in 2005, 2006 and 2008.
