Hans Fisher, Ph.D., professor emeritus at Rutgers University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators & Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nutritional chemistry.
Dr. Fisher celebrates more than six decades as a nutritional biochemist and professor for Rutgers University. His career was marked by groundbreaking research including the discovery of a link between fiber intake and lowered cholesterol, a novel treatment for alcohol withdrawals, and dietary factors in the treatment of alcohol use disorders and alcoholic fatty liver. Born in Germany, Dr. Fisher immigrated to the United States in the early 1940s. He began his career as a student at Rutgers University, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1950, and continued his studies at the University of Connecticut, earning a Master of Science in 1952. Dr. Fisher was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in nutritional biochemistry by the University of Illinois in 1954 and returned to Rutgers University the same year to accept an assistant professor position.
Dr. Fisher remained with Rutgers University for the rest of his career, rising to associate professor in 1957 and professor in 1962. He was named chair of the school’s Department of Nutritional Sciences in 1966, a post he held until his promotion to associate provost in 1988. From 1972 until he was granted professor emeritus status in 2010, Dr. Fisher was designated a Distinguished Professor, and he spent much of the 2010s as a visiting scientist in the department of surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after concluding his teaching career. Throughout his career, Dr. Fisher also served as a consultant to numerous food and pharmaceutical producers, was a frequent contributor to professional journals, and published “The Rutgers Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol,” 1986, and “Prolonging Healthful Living with a Fiber-Rich Diet,” 2010. In recognition of his revolutionary contributions to modern nutritional science, Dr. Fisher has been honored by the American Feed Association and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Nutritional Sciences, and the Research Society on Alcoholism.
