Sanjiban Chakraborty, PhD, Senior Research Scientist at Novol, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in polymer chemistry.
Dr. Chakraborty initially fell in love with chemistry after being given a toy lab set in elementary school and finding himself fascinated by the broad range of reactions he could produce – as well as their applications. He completed a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at the University of Calcutta in 2000, graduating with a 4.0 GPA and a desire to continue his studies in a subspecialty that would allow him to create something that had the potential to change lives or help people, rather than remaining a theoretical or research chemist. He remained at the University of Calcutta for three additional years to pursue a Bachelor of Technology in polymer science, working with Reliance Industries Limited (PARC) in 2002 as an in-plant trainee before his graduation. Dr. Chakraborty immigrated to the United States in 2005 to begin doctoral coursework and accepted a graduate research assistant position at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Dr. Chakraborty completed a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry in 2011, and spent the next four years as a postdoctoral associate at Northwestern University. After spending the 2016 to 2017 academic year as a senior research scientist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, he moved into his current position as a senior scientist at Novol Inc., a startup manufacturing specialty ophthalmic polymeric prescription lenses for myopic patients. Recognized as an expert in synthesizing small polymer molecules, Dr. Chakraborty has contributed to three major patents in his field and worked on projects funded by ExxonMobil and Dow Chemical, among others. His research has been extensively published in industry journals, and he continues his work in academia as a mentor to three graduate and undergraduate students in the Posner Fellowship and International Institute for Nanotechnology programs.
Dr. Chakraborty attributes his success to hard work and tenacity. He sees his growth and professional autonomy as the highlights of his career, emphasizing his pride in having become an independent researcher and authority in his field.
