Evan Barr Douple, Ph.D., the retired associate chief of research at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of radiation biophysics.

After nearly five decades in his industry, Dr. Douple retired from his position as the associate chief of research at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Hiroshima, Japan, in 2013. He had previously served as the director of the Board on Radiation Effects Research at the National Academy of Sciences from 1997 until 2007 and began his work with the organization as a staff scientist in 1992. From 1973 until 1993, Dr. Douple taught at Dartmouth College Medical School, rising from an instructor to become a professor of radiobiology.

Dr. Douple received a Bachelor of Science from Millersville State University in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in radiation biophysics from Kansas University in 1972. While pursuing his doctoral studies, he worked as a teaching assistant at Kansas University and a science teacher for the Lebanon School District, and he was later awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. Throughout his career, Dr. Douple has been a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Radiation Research Society.
Among his career accomplishments, Dr. Douple is particularly proud to have developed a method for inducing hypothermia via microwave in cancer patients, as well as his research in the utility of platinum chemotherapy. His work has been extensively published, and he has contributed more than 100 articles to professional journals including Cancer Treatment Reviews, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and the International Journal of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Douple served as an editor for various books, including “Biology of Thermal Potentiation of Radiotherapy” in 1989 and “Interstitial Hypothermia” in 1992.
