Neville L. Holder, retired research chemist at Sanofi, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pharmaceutical development.
Dr. Holder is a retired research chemist and regulatory consultant with more than four decades of experience in pharmaceutical research and development. Born in Barbados, he developed an early fascination with science and medicine, and earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and mathematics at the University of the West Indies, graduating with honors in 1965. He began his career as a chemist with the Gillette Research Institute in Rockville, Maryland, and completed a Master of Science in organic chemistry at the University of the West Indies in 1969. Dr. Holder was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of the West Indies in 1973 before returning to the Gillette Research Institute, where he would remain through 1978. From 1978 until 1992, Dr. Holder was an associate senior investigator for SmithKline Beecham Pharmacists, departing to join Aventis Pharmacists as a senior research scientist.
He was named a research fellow of the company in 1998, and in 2002, Dr. Holder became the principal scientist at Aventis Pharmacists. After the company’s merger with Sanofi, in 2005, Dr. Holder continued his work as the new entity’s principal research investigator until 2007, when he retired to focus on regulatory consulting. He is an expert in column chromatographic chemistry, and his work has included studies isolating compounds in the Jamaican cedar plant as well as analysis of the synthesis and decay of various pharmacological compounds. Dr. Holder has continued to pursue additional professional development throughout his career, and in 2002, he completed an additional Master of Science in quality assurance and regulatory affairs at the Temple University School of Pharmacy. He holds numerous patents in his field, has been extensively published, and sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Organic Chemistry and Carbohydrate Chemistry. Dr. Holder is the past president of the National Organization of Professional Advancement of Black Chemists & Chemical Engineers, and remains a longtime member of the group’s scholarship and education committees.
