Virginia T. McLemore, PhD, CPG, Principal Senior Economic Geologist at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in economic geology.

Dr. McLemore is an educator and certified professional geologist with more than four decades of experience in the mineral engineering and extraction industries. With her grandmother’s encouragement, Dr. McLemore pursued her early passion for science and attended the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science in geology and geophysics in 1977 and a Master of Science in geology in 1980. Throughout the 1970s, she worked as a field geologist for the Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America and Urangesellschaft USA, Inc., before joining the New Mexico Bureau of Mines as a research assistant in 1979. 

She was a geologist with the New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources from 1980 until 1994, when she became a senior economic geologist with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines & Mineral Resources. During this time, she continued her education, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in geoscience from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993. Dr. McLemore was named the Bureau’s principal senior economic geologist in 2017, where she remains in addition to her work as an adjunct professor in the mineral engineering and geosciences department at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. She has contributed extensively to professional journals and is the co-author of the 1989 study “Uranium Resources in New Mexico.” Dr. McLemore is a two-time AIME Environmental Stewardship Distinguished Service Award Winner and has been included in Marquis Who’s Who since 1965. Outside her career in geology, Dr. McLemore is a nationally-ranked competitive shooter, and is active in the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association, the National Rifle Association, and the New Mexico Technology Gun Club.
