Valerie Carvajal, Associate Director, USMA Clinical Research at Bayer AG, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pharmaceutical research.
After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences with a concentration on microbiology in 2007 from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Ms. Carvajal continued her education with a Master of Science in clinical research administration in 2012 from Walden University in Minneapolis. She is certified as a clinical research project professional and program manager and in monitoring clinical drug studies by the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA), in protecting human research subjects by The National Institutes of Health and as a clinical research associate and coordinator by Barnett Educational Services / Cambridge Healthtech Institute.
After providing superior service as a research associate with F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG from 2007 to 2013 and associate clinical research scientist with Novartis from 2013 to 2015, Ms. Carvajal excelled as a clinical trial manager with Shionogi Inc. from 2015 to 2017 and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals from 2017 to 2019, where she served as a senior clinical trial manager from 2019 to 2020. Since 2020, she has prospered as Associate Director, USMA Clinical Research, Bayer Pharmaceuticals in Whippany, New Jersey, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical firms.
Ms. Carvajal has made an impact in her field because of her drive and motivation to provide high quality work and being cognizant of the overarching goal of advancing health care in her own way to improve society and the quality of life of individuals who may otherwise be suffering or require better options for their treatment. She is always happy to know that her all the hard work she has been doing is helping others.
Her parents, who were born in South America, zealously advocated for her education and for her to become an independent person, which gave her the push to keep moving forward, whether in her personal life or career-wise.
Ms. Carvajal feels proudest of her contributions to numerous studies and programs, most notably her work at Shionogi Inc, which was part of the sister studies that were implemented for influenza. It was a new venture that was much more user-friendly, giving her a sense of pride in knowing that she had a role to play in the creation of the products that are now widely marketed across the globe.
As a Latina, Ms. Carvajal is very interested in driving diversity and inclusion within clinical studies, adding that, historically, underrepresented groups were not typically enrolled many studies. This means that many companies are not accurately representing the population they are hoping to serve. Her position is relevant to these issues, as her work involves garnering real-world evidence for their products.
In the coming years, Ms. Carvajal would like to be established in Bayer Pharmaceuticals to an extent that would allow her to make a positive change in the areas she is interested in. Her hope is to see some standard operating procedures reflecting diversity and inclusion as a top priority in protocol development or when they are working with investigators for their study development. She envisions her career growing as well in terms of advancing to a director role that would enable her to mentor others and provide support in their trial management while also learning from them.
