James S. Buff, Retired Physicist at Applied Materials, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics.

A highly accomplished leader in his field, Dr. Buff excelled as a senior physicist for Applied Materials from 1996 until his retirement in 2022. He previously succeeded as a senior research associate at Dartmouth College from 1994 until 1996, as a senior scientist in Nashua, New Hampshire, from 1989 to 1994 and as a group leader at Mission Research Corporation from 1980 until 1989. Earlier, he imparted his industry knowledge and expertise as an assistant professor at Dartmouth College from 1978 to 1980. He began his professional journey as a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1974 until 1976 and subsequently as a scientist with the International Business Machines Corporation from 1976 to 1978.

Motivated to become involved in his profession because of his proficiency in math and physical science during high school, Dr. Buff earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1969. He later concluded his studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, from which he obtained a master’s degree in 1971 and a doctorate in physics in 1974

The holder of numerous patents and the author of many publications related to his field, Dr. Buff’s most notable achievement was the role he played in designing incredibly successful implanters; 2,000 were sold at $5 million apiece. He is also incredibly proud of his achievements at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he had the opportunity to work with the SAS-3 x-ray astronomy satellite. He has been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the International Astronomical Union, the American Astronomical Society and the American Physical Society.
