E. Glenn Tickner, Retired Bioengineer at Point Biomedical Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in bioengineering.
A major contributor to his field who developed extensive expertise and made an impactful discovery in ultrasound contrast medicine during a professional journey that exceeded 50 years, Mr. Tickner completed his illustrious career at Point Biomedical as a distinguished research scientist from 1996 to 2006. Previously, he excelled as the president and chief executive officer at Microsome between 1990 and 1996 and as a bioengineering consultant in Coulterville, California, from 1987 until 1989. He worked at Rasor Associates Inc. from 1976 to 1987, serving as president after starting his time with the company as vice president of the medical division. Moreover, he was a project engineer for the Man System Division of Acurex Corporation from 1973 until 1976, a research associate with the Bioengineering and Physiology Division of Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation from 1966 to 1973, and an engineer and bioengineer at Itek/Vidya Incorporated between 1960 and 1965. Mr. Tickner began his career as a research engineer for the Wave Research Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley from 1955 to 1958 and as an engineer with the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation’s Missile and Space Division from 1959 until 1960.
Mr. Tickner is credited with inventing the use of microbubbles for ultrasound contrast in the 1970s and is recognized for designing the first successful arc-plasma generator. Microbubbles allowed providers to determine the amount of perfusion the heart is receiving, as well as discover the presence of the inner parts of coronary occlusions. As a result of his many years of successful research, he is the holder of numerous patents in the United States and Europe.
A seasoned expert in his field, Mr. Tickner earned an associate degree from Monterey Peninsula College in 1954. He subsequently obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California Berkeley College of Engineering in 1957. To expand his knowledge of his industry and broaden his professional options, he completed PhD coursework at Stanford University between 1961 and 1963.
A prolific writer, Mr. Tickner has published his first novel, “Instinct or Learned?,” and he is in the process of writing a second book, which is temporarily titled, “Jessi,” and is about the life of a young woman who overcomes the trauma of having been physically abused by her father when she was a youth. He additionally has written many essential scientific papers on dynamic similitude and has contributed content related to his field to nearly 100 publications. Notably, he received the Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award in 2022.
