Walter F. Herczyk, MLS (ASCP), CHS (ACHI), Director of Laboratory Services at Gift of Life Michigan, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in immunogenetics and histocompatibility.

An award-winning scientist with 33 years of professional experience, Mr. Herczyk has excelled as the administrative laboratory director with Gift of Life Michigan since 2014. In his current role, he oversees laboratory testing, leads strategic planning and performs budgeting tasks. Previously, he thrived as the manager of the Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics Laboratory at The University of Chicago from 2006 to 2014. He has also served as a supervisor at the Duke University Medical Center.

Mr. Herczyk earned a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1984. Dedicated to building expertise in his field, he achieved status as a certified histocompatibility specialist through the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics and obtained certification as a medical laboratory technician from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. He currently serves as the vice president of operations with the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).

Mr. Herczyk’s most notable career achievement is receiving the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics in 2022, in recognition of his significant contributions toward advancing the mission and vision of ASHI and transplantation. He was also recognized with the same organization’s Outstanding Technologist Award in 2010. The most rewarding aspect of his career is knowing that the contributions he makes at work allow individuals the opportunity to continue and extend their life through transplantation. Dedicated to his community, Mr. Herczyk carries out volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and local food banks. Notably, he is a recipient of the Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award.
