Ray W. Chrisman, PhD, Founding Member of Norse Biotech and Principal of Chrisman Consulting, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biotechnology and consulting.
Since 2017, Dr. Chrisman has served as the founding member of Norse Biotech, a company working to produce innovative, sustainable products from locally sourced biomass. Norse Biotech’s first product was Betulin, which is derived from the waste bark of harvested white birch trees and which protects them from sunburn in the winter. The company found a way to extract and isolate very pure Betulin. In addition, Dr. Chrisman has been the principal of Chrisman Consulting since 2012.
At Chrisman Consulting, Dr. Chrisman focuses on business development in the biotechnology area. He has worked with the Iowa Corn Promotion Board on process development for new corn products and new process technology development. Currently, the Iowa Corn Promotion Board has developed very efficient methods of converting glucose from cornstarch to glycols, which have many uses. The process provides a sustainable source of glycols.
With decades of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Chrisman worked for the Dow Chemical Company from 1977 to 2004, and finished his time there as a chemical sciences capability development leader. From 2004 to 2010, he was the president and chief scientist of Atodyne Technologies LLC, and from 2010 to 2012, he was the scientific director of pharmaceutical operations for Atochemis in Gerenzano Italy. Dr. Chrisman garnered additional experience as a senior scientist and analytical consultant for MATRIC Europa from 2011 to 2013.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Chrisman attended Manchester College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1969. He continued his higher education at Purdue University, graduating in 1976 with a Doctor of Philosophy in inorganic chemistry. Alongside his primary professional endeavors, Dr. Chrisman has shared his knowledge as an affiliate professor and visiting scholar at the University of Washington.
Owing to his credentials and expertise, Dr. Chrisman has been an invited reviewer for doctoral theses in Africa. In addition, he has contributed to numerous articles in professional journals. Across the world, he has been a speaker and presenter at meetings and conferences in his field, and for more than a decade, he co-organized the Rome Meetings for the University of Washington. Dr. Chrisman received several Small Business Innovation Research Grants, as well as grants to develop methods of metal parts manufacturing and pharmaceutical operations. In addition, he holds several patents and was named a Distinguished Science Alumni of Purdue University in 2006.
