Dr. Wijewarnasuriya is an expert in infrared detectors and sensors, having garnered prior experience with a company specializing in infrared technology.
Alongside his primary positions, Dr. Wijewarnasuriya remains dedicated to his field as a member of the board for the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, now SPIE. He also served on the program committee for the U.S. Workshop on Physics and Chemistry of II-VI Materials. For nearly 20 years, he served as a scientist with the U.S. Army, working on improving infrared technology for applications such as night vision.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Wijewarnasuriya attended the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, earning a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1981. He continued his higher education at the Illinois Institute of Technology, obtaining a master’s degree in semiconductor physics in 1984. Dr. Wijewarnasuriya concluded his higher education at the University of Illinois Chicago, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in semiconductor physics in 1991.
Dr. Wijewarnasuriya attributes his success to his dedication. He became involved in his field because of his fascination with mathematics, and he believes that being a competent physicist is dependent on a foundation in mathematics. In the coming years, Dr. Wijewarnasuriya hopes to continue excelling in the field of infrared sensing. He enjoys woodworking and photography in his spare time.
