Ian A. Wilson, PhD, professor at The Scripps Research Institute, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of biology.

Bolstered by more than four decades of experience, Dr. Wilson is a proven expert in the scientific community. Specializing in structural biology, he has served as a Hansen professor of structural biology at The Scripps Research Institute since 1982. In his current position, he runs his own laboratory, which conducts biomedical research on infectious diseases. Adjacent to his primary duties in the field, he also acts as the chair of the institution’s department of integrative structural and computational biology. In his previous positions, Dr. Wilson was the director of the Joint Center for Structural Genomics, as part of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, from 2000 to 2016. As part of his dedication to his profession, Dr. Wilson has maintained his membership within the international scientific advisory board of Academia Sinica since 2015. 

In his prior academic pursuits, he studied at Oxford University and achieved a PhD in molecular biophysics in 1976, and he ultimately achieved a Doctor of Science in biological sciences at the institution in 2000. To commemorate his accomplishments, he was honored with The Second Outstanding Mentor Award from the Society of Fellows in 2012 and The Frist Bernie Gilula Award for Faculty Excellence in 2010, amongst several other accolades. Attributing his success to his training and passion, Dr. Wilson is particularly proud of his work in the early stages of his career, shortly following his postdoctoral studies. During this time, he was able to successfully identify the structure and hematological parameters of the influenza virus.
