Donald A. Close, PhD, a retired physicist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of physics.
With more than three decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Close previously distinguished himself as the team leader for the Russian Highly Enriched Uranium Purchase Agreement and Transparency Implementation Program at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Joining the technical staff at the lab in 1972, he went on to devise several novel techniques that would better facilitate the jobs of uranium enrichment inspectors throughout the world. Through Dr. Close’s expertise in nuclear instrumentation and nuclear material safeguards, he has extensive experience working with International Atomic Energy Agency nuclear facility inspectors. Likewise, he contributed to the writing of more than 100 articles, many of which appeared in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, a peer-reviewed scientific journal, and worked on behalf of the International Atomic Energy Agency for three years. In honor of his manifold accomplishments, Dr. Close earned numerous accolades prior to his retirement in 2005, including several Distinguished Performance Group Awards, NIS-6 Achievement Awards, and Certificates of Appreciation.
Dr. Close initially studied physics and mathematics at Hastings College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1968. Following this achievement, he went on to the University of Kansas, from which he attained a Master of Arts in physics and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1970 and 1972. To remain aware of developments in his field, he has held membership with several relevant organizations, including the American Physical Society and the American Institute of Physics, as well as several honorable societies, including Lambda Delta Lambda, Sigma Xi, and Sigma Pi Sigma. In accounting for all he has accomplished, he largely credits the quality of his academic journey, as well as the influence of his colleagues, whose talents and encouragement did much to sustain his success. Dr. Close is always willing to help and guide others.
