Philip Teas, PhD, a geologist at ONE, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of sea floor exploration.

Motivated by a strong desire to understand the inner workings of the Earth, Dr. Teas has distinguished himself through his accomplishments as a deep sea geologist, and as a partner at ONE, which works to manage, supervise, and oversee the acquisition of high-resolution imagery of the seafloor. Focused on locating deep-sea hydrocarbon seeps and determining seafloor characteristics for the purposes of laying down infrastructure, most notably pipelines and cables, ONE’s overall goal is to map the world’s oceans from a depth of 500 to 5,000 meters in order to attain a better understanding of marine geology and define active petroleum sites.

Hailing from a history of work in the oil and energy industry, Dr. Teas specializes in seafloor feature identification and analysis, structural geology, and tectonic and geomorphic science. Prior to accepting his current role in 2014, he served as a geologist at various organizations, including Niko Resources Ltd., Chevron and Unocal, as well as Black Gold Energy, a startup venture he helped establish in 2006. In his role as chief geologist there, he helped to develop seafloor mapping and specimen acquisition techniques that he has continued to leverage into the present day. Well-regarded for his accomplishments, Dr. Teas was invited to deliver a keynote address before the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in London, England, in 2017.

Outside of his vocational efforts, Dr. Teas has been deeply involved with TrueNorth Community Services, a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist communities with attaining self-sufficiency and alleviate home insecurity. In his hole there, Dr. Teas works to mentor high school students, for whom he hopes to emphasize that one can surpass their innermost doubts and ultimately achieve success.

Before embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Teas studied geology at the University of Texas at Austin, from which he received a Bachelor of Science in 1992. He went on to attend the University of California Santa Cruz, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in geological and Earth sciences in 1998.

In accounting for his success, Dr. Teas largely credits the providence of luck, as well as the increasing number of opportunities he has seized upon. Likewise, he works diligently on behalf of his profession, committing all of his energy to his professional endeavors. Looking toward the future, Dr. Teas hopes to promote significant concepts regarding his approach to seafloor exploration and further disseminate the data he has collected.
