Prior to this position, he was active as a senior member of the technical staff with the aforementioned laboratories between 2020 and 2023. He previously served as a postdoctoral appointee at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies with Sandia National Labs from 2017 to 2020. Dr. Sarma began his career as a research intern with Nokia Bell Labs in Holmdel, New Jersey in 2016.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Sarma completed a summer internship in environmental physics at the Indian Institute of Technology in 2007, a summer internship in atmospheric physics at the High Altitude Observatory at UCAR in 2008, and a summer internship in astrophysics at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in 2009. He subsequently pursued an education at The University of Texas at Dallas, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics with a minor in nanoscience and technology, magna cum laude, in 2010. He continued his academic efforts at Yale University, obtaining both a Master of Science in applied physics and a Master of Philosophy in applied physics in 2013. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Sarma concluded his studies at Yale University in 2017, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in applied physics.
As a testament to his impressive endeavors, Dr. Sarma has accrued a number of accolades throughout his career. During his studies at The University of Texas at Dallas, he was the recipient of an Academic Distinction Scholarship in 2006, a Van Ness Scholarship in 2008, an Undergraduate Research Grant in 2008, and a Frito-Lay Scholarship in 2009. Subsequently, his graduate research on gyroscopes was recognized among The Top 10 Stories of 2015 by Photonics.com. Dr. Sarma was notably honored with Second Placement at the Annual Postdoctoral Showcase by Sandia National Laboratories, National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, and Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2018.
Dr. Sarma attributes his success to having amazing mentors and teachers who were willing to guide him throughout his life, especially upon his arrival in the United States. Drawn to the field of science in his youth, he was greatly inspired by his experiences in the Indian Science Congress, which provided him with the chance to interact with esteemed scientists and politicians. Among the many highlights of his career, he is proud of his published research on optical gyroscopes and mesoscopic physics, which have been cited and discovered by millions within his industry. In the coming years, Dr. Sarma aims to contribute more to Sandia National Laboratories while working to improve the efficiency of processing information from satellites, drones, and other communication channels by developing new photonic devices combined with artificial intelligence such that it can analyze data on a larger scale and more efficiently than a computer.
